“On behalf of Swart Rivier Farm and Miss Earth South Africa, we would like to formally thank you and your team for the enormous donation made to our food garden project.
We have lovingly named the tree Jess, and will have a plaque made for her.”
Maré du Toit – Miss Earth SA 2020 Delegate
It has been a strange “re-start” to the 2020 year after we were allowed to trade again post lockdown.
In August, we were contacted by Maré du Toit regarding a food garden project she wants to start on the Swart Rivier Farm, just outside Stellenbosch.
Her main goal is to teach the community and children on the farm on sustainable living and balanced eating. Fruit trees generally require a lot of maintenance due to their susceptibility to pests and diseases, except the Pomegranate. This small and sturdy tree is super tough! We call it a no-fuss tree. Therefore, we decided that this would be an excellent addition to the food garden project.
We don’t just donate the tree, but all the bells and whistles of our services. Supply, delivery, installation, compost, staking and digging the hole.
According to Miss du Toit, the farm has a soup kitchen and fruit/veg garden that are private initiatives run by the owner and wine maker.
“Stellenrust (Swart Rivier) is a formidable company who go out on a limb to get involved in ethical trade, internal community upliftment and even supports a lion sanctuary,” says du Toit.
We are proud to have played a small part in the upliftment of this community, and hope this inspires others to do what they can with what they have.
