Westlake is a small community located between Pollsmoor Prison, Steenberg Village Shopping Centre, Reddam School and the Westlake Office Park. The local churches have all joined together to create The Westlake United Church Trust (WUCT).
The mission of the WUCT Trust is to uplift and empower the residents of Westlake Village through education, skills development, youth development, job creation programmes and home based care, so that they will become a self-sustaining, thriving community.
In 2018, we were approached by South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) for the possibility to donate a tree to this community.
We decided on an Outeniqua Yellowwwood (Afrocarpus falcatus) in a 500-litre bag size. This is a forest specie, but does really well in the urban environment by being able to tolerate heat and cold conditions. It is a also a fast grower and will provide the community with the much-needed shade and “greening” effect next to the road.
The tree was planted on the sidewalk next to The Emmanuel Educare Centre, a registered pre-school for up to 210 children aged from 3 to 6 years. The teachers and children will care for the tree and watch it grow for many generations to come.
We would like to thank SALI and Peninsula landscaping for their assistance with the tree donation.
