Trees South Africa originated in the 1980’s as a tree maintenance business and has since the year 2000 grown rapidly to become a one stop tree services and products (Arboriculture) business of repute. The continued development and growth of the large tree nurseries and transplanting divisions, has resulted in the various disciplines within the business becoming more and more diverse. In 2005 it was decided to sell off the tree maintenance contracting division (pruning, felling, disease control, chipping and stump grinding).

As from 2006, Trees South Africa specializes in Arboriculture Consulting, the Production and Planting of Large Specimen Trees and the Relocation of Large Trees. Offices are situated in Stellenbosch. The Papyrus Tree Sales Nursery (Tree Warehouse) is centrally located (35 km from Cape Town) on Winery Road just off the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, surrounded by beautiful vineyard estates. The owner is Dag Willems, is a professional forest ecologist and arborist (B.sc Forestry US) with more than 25 years of experience with trees. Dag spent the first years of his career as a forest ecologist and eventually as the regional manager of indigenous forests for Western Cape region, Department of Forestry. During this period he was co-author of internationally published scientific papers on the development of a sustainable harvesting system for the Knysna and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests. In recent years Dag has changed his focus from the science of trees in their most natural habitat, to the science of ornamental trees occurring in the most unnatural (urban and semi-urban) environments. He is consulting for a wide range of organizations, including various universities, Cape Town City Council and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

Trees South Africa has become the leader in the field of relocation of large and mature trees, being the first to elevate this discipline to a professional level in South Africa. The pioneering development of unique techniques and specialized equipment, combined with knowledge of South African species and conditions, has resulted in successful tree relocations, never before considered possible in South Africa.

We are members of the International Society for Arboriculture (ISA), and operate according to standards set by the society. We are also members of the Cape Green Forum, and the SA Institute for Environmental and Recreation Management.
